Domaine St Prefert Wine
Isabel Ferrand is headed for the top, of that there can be little doubt. To say she is chasing a certain producer's crown would be an understatement! Together with her husband she purchased this moribund estate in 2003 and since then has employed the help of Chateauneuf's resident oenologist Philippe Cambie. To the further astonishment of the village, Isabelle has managed to purchase a few extra hectares of prime vineyards too! The production at present is small, a mere 22000 bottles, but as her new purchases come on-stream expect this figure to rise. The main focus of her vineyards is to the south-east of the village in the Quartier de Serres. Here, the soil is galets roules (red pebbles). There are a number of red cuvees made at the estate but it was the selection Charles Giraud made from 60% Grenache and 40% old vine Mourvedre that really stood out. Aged in three-year-old demi-muids after fermentation. The grapes are 100% destemmed. Inky black and brimming with black cherry fruits, liquorice and complex spices. Full and large scaled with wonderful richness and opulence, the Mourvedre adding a more sauvage character. This cuvee will certainly need plenty of time. 10-20+.

The 2006 Chateauneuf du Pape Reserve Auguste Favier is slightly darker ruby plum in color, with plenty of kirsch as well as licorice, lavender, herbs, and meat juices. It is full-bodied, dense, and a stunning example of a terrific 2006. It should drink well fo... [more details]

What I tend to think of as the top cuvee, although it is not that certain when you taste these wines next to each other, is the Chateauneuf du Pape Collection Charles Giraud. The 2009, which is showing better from bottle than it did last year, is a wonderfully... [more details]

The 2009 Chateauneuf du Pape Reserve Auguste Favier displays much more kirsch, smoke, licorice and lavender. The 100% stem inclusion has also given the wine a sort of bouquet garni notion in the aromas and flavors. It is full-bodied, much more evolved and forw... [more details]

The celestial 2010 Chateauneuf du Pape Collection Charles Giraud could come very close to equaling the genius of the 2007. This is again a blend of nearly 60% Grenache and 40% Mourvedre, but Isabel said it did include a touch of Syrah, although it probably onl... [more details]
