Domaine St Nicolas Wine
Ile d’Olonne
The vineyards of St. Nicolas are set amidst the marshes of the Ile d’Olonne, near the Vendee coast of Western France. They are protected from the Ocean by a stretch of Pine forests, which create a unique micro-climate.
When the Michon family took over the domain in 1960, the vineyards were dying out but after much work and investment, today there are 33 ha under vine. The terroir here is clay and schist and the vineyards are planted with Pinot Noir, Gamay, Cabernet Franc and Negrette for the reds; and Chenin, Chardonnay and Groslot Gris for the whites. The estate has been completely bio-dynamic since 1995. All the grapes are hand picked with careful selection. The white and rose wines are vinified and matured in stainless steel, whilst the reds are matured in oak vats.
Thierry’s wines are refreshingly different. His aim, he says, is always to produce wines of the best possible quality which possess a perfect balance between purity of fruit and minerality of terroir.
