Domaine Schoffit Wine
Domaine Schoffit consists of 10 hectares of vineyards including a proportion of Colmar's lieu-dit Harth vineyard and the Clos St. Theobald situated on the Grand Cru Rangen. Bernard Schoffit purchased the Clos in 1986 from Charles Hippler, President of the Syndicat du Viticole de Thann. Since its acquisition Schoffit has at last been able to show his true potential. Fifty percent of the vines are now over thirty years of age and yields are severely restricted. The low yields are an important factor in the superb quality of his famous Chasselas Cuvee from the alluvial soils of the Harth vineyard - these vines are now over sixty years of age.
This is another great domaine! The wines of Schoffit never seem to disappoint. Bernard always achieves a lovely ripeness in his wines yet even in the more opulent cuvees there is a fabulous balance and finesse. At generic level, he is renowned for his particularly exciting cuvee of Chasselas, as mentioned above, and produces a beautifully harmonious, dry Muscat and elegant Gewurzraminer. These are not vins de terroir but a delicious vins de fruit.
These wines might not be vin sde terroir but Bernard’s three Rangen wines most certainly are. All three varieties manage to capture the power and smokiness of the vineyard albeit in a tamer, more laid back way than the Zind Humbrecht’ example. The Riesling possesses wonderful concentration and minerality but remains poised and elegant. The Pinot Gris has an incredibly concentrated bouquet with honeyed hints of botrytis mingling with the powerful grip of the Rangen. It possesses a superb lift of acidity on the palate which cuts through the luscious, yet complex fruit. Finally from the Rangen, the Gewurztraminer plays tricks with the palate, offering a surprisingly delicate aromatic varietal character combined with the distinctive minerality of the Rangen.
