Domaine Roger Sabon Wine
A hundred yards or so down the road from Domaine du Pegau is the meticulously run estate of Roger Sabon. A rather garish sign greets you as you enter the domaine: a logo obviously designed by those that feel Sabon produces a modern, easy drinking wine for the supermarkets. Well, someone should fire their marketing man since nothing could be further from the truth!
This was my first visit here [in 1998] and after a slightly frosty 'a passing tourist' reception Monsieur Sabon and I settled down to good, hearty degustation. Roger Sabon himself (the estate's day to day running is now carried out by his sons) is a very forward thinking individual, constantly striving to improve his wines and consistently ignoring the advice of those oenologists who have imployed him to fine and filter his wines.
The estate is surprisingly small, around 14 hectares, which are divided between his properties in Lirac, Chateauneuf-du-Pape and Cotes du Rhone. The vineyards are well situated in Les Cabrieres, La Crau, Courtherzon and Nalys. The average age of his vines is unusually high with some of them dating back to the early 1900s. The general cepage is made up of 70% Grenache although this is reduced in his top two cuvees. Like the Ferauds, Sabon is a traditionalist, but prefers to age his wines in small oak piece, none of which are new, for six months following a sojourn en cuve.
Roger Sabon puts a great emphasis upon elegance rather than power in his wines and at first they can be deceiving. With time, however, they grow and gain in depth and complexity, almost Burgundian. I was totally taken with his wines and most strongly recommend them to you. They will develop and age beautifully, taking on subtle flavours. They are wines for drinking pleasure.

in stock - only one bottle remaining!
The Reserve is full with a bouquet of cherries, wild herbs and just a touch of spice. Dense and powerful, with a superb balance and unctuous, mouth filling quality of fruit. I suspect it will age well for many years. (JG) [more details]
