Domaine Marc Sorrel Wine
My fondness for the wines of Marc Sorrel remain unabated, his magnificent red and white wines are classic examples of old fashioned, uncompromising Hermitage. The tall, wiry Marc has learnt his craft well after the difficult start he had in 1982 when taking over from his late father, Henri. His top white Hermitage cuvee, Rocoules, is made from 45 year old vines and barrel fermented. It is a rich, gutsy wine capable of great longevity. Marc's finest red cuvee, Le Greal, comes from a parcel of 50 year old vines grown, in the main, on le Meal, which is also the main ingredient in Jaboulet' s 'La Chapelle'. On average only around 150-200 cases of Greal are produced and after each harvest I make sure of my allocation by being first on the phone.

A slow fermentation appears to have built considerable texture and untuosity into this rich, syrupy wine. A classic in the making. Dense and concentrated, maybe equal to the stunning ‘99. Drink young or age 10-15 years. (RP) [more details]
