Domaine du Closel Wine
Obviously 2003 was an extraordinary vintage and produced wines with amazing ripeness. The cuvee Les Caillardieres has been labelled Demi-Sec although in reality it only possesses 7.6 degrees of residual sugar and is only slightly off-dry on the palate. Since Evelyne de Pontbriand took over the domaine from her mother Madame de Jesey three years ago she has swiftly brought her own style and personality to the wines. Retaining the typicity and tradition, Evelyne has also moved the domaine forward from the backward austerity of Savenieres to produce more open, fruit driven wines. This philosophy, combined with the super-ripeness of 2003 has created this unusually luscious Savennieres.
The site of Les Caillardieres is on the high plateau with grey schist soils with sand and primary rock some 30 to 40 cm beneath. The characteristics of the wine is always more floral than mineral and the palate is softer and rounder than the Clos du Papillon. The 2003 is ripe, slightly honeyed and very floral on the bouquet with layers of unctuously ripe apricot fruits balanced by an elegant acidity. This is a fabulous partner to spicy or creamy fish and white meat dishes although delicious on its own.
2002 was a very 'classic' vintage and the Papillon is a text-book example ? steely, mineral and delineated but possessing lovely open, ripe fruits. The La Jalousie really reflects Evelyne's refreshing influence on the wines. This cuvee is an early drinking, aromatic and much fruitier styled Savennieres which is also very versatile being able to partner fish, poultry and white meat dishes but is also exceedingly enjoyable on its own.
