Jean-Ernest Sauvion of Chateau du Cleray is one of the most highly respected vignerons in the region and produces a range of truly excellent Muscadet. The property owns 30 hectares of vineyards situated in Vallet, one of the appellation’s finest communes. The terroir here is sand and clay. The vineyards are scrupulously maintained and yields are carefully restricted. Fermentation is temperature controlled and all the Mucadets are matured ‘sur lie’. Jean-Ernest also produces a range of single varietal Vin de Pays. These are all superbly vinified but the finest, in our opinion, is the Chardonnay. A refreshing contrast to the New World style, this wine is fresh and clean with subtle, elegant fruit flavours. It is also exceptional value.
