Canopy S.L Wine
The winery was formed in 2000, when three friends Belarmino Fernandez, Alphonso Chacon and Jordi Vidal, decided to combine their knowledge of winemaking in order to put the DO of Mentrida in the province of Toledo on the map. Wine has been produced in this region since at least the 16th century, although it is little known outside of Madrid, which for many years has been its main market. However, like many regions in Spain it is home to a number of old Garnacha wines and with the influx of a new generation of winemakers, who understand that the combination of old vines and modern winemaking practices, superb wine can be made.
This is the task that these three friends set about. They acquired some high altitude vineyards situated in the mountain range of San Vicente planted with old vine Garnacha and Syrah, which given their elevated position gives their wines more freshness and minerality than most wines produced from a land locked region with a continental climate. The composition of the soil is another reason they chose this location. The region can boast an almost unique soil composition (with the exception of some areas in Galicia) of silica and granite over a sandy/ Clay base. Like many young winemakers they have a fundamental respect for the ecosystem and practice sustainable development.
We are offering their ‘Tres Patas’, which is a blend of 80% Garnacha and 20% Syrah from 50 year old vines. The grapes are harvested at optimum ripeness, de-stemmed and fermented in stainless steel followed by 6 months ageing in 500 litre casks. This judicious use of oak allows the purity and elegance of the fruit to shine through.
