Bodegas y Vinedos Vina Somosa Wine
The denominacion of Valdeorras is a comarca (a traditional land division) in the Galician province of Ourense. The vineyards of this region were established at the beginning of the 20th century and have spread to cover an area of approximately 1,400 hectraes and is home to some 42 bodegas. The bulk of the vineyards are planted with Alicante (Grenache) and Mencia along with the white variety Palomino, which is mainly used for table wines. However it is the indigenous white variety Godello (Verdelho) which is the real rising star of Valdeorras. Stylistically it is quiet aromatic with a little more weight and warmth than Albarino, the other well know Galcian grape variety.
Vina Somosa was founded around twenty years ago by Victor Fernandes in the cellars below his house. He has since moved the winery, about four years ago to a modern purpose built facility. As an aside his cellars are now used by one Rafael Palcios to make his As Sortes wines in from grapes that come from the same vineyards as Somosa’s Seleccion cuvee.
The Classico cuvee is completely fermented in stainless steel tanks in order to capture the freshness and minerality of this variety, whereas the Seleccion, is as the name suggests a selection of grapes from older plots, mainly grown on fractured slate soils, which after picking are then fermented and aged in 15,000 litre foudres
