Bodegas Espelt Wine
According to the domaine “ Emporda is a land of lunatics, of crazy people. A land in which impulsiveness dominates the character of its people. This characteristic has led us to plant vines in a land that is hard to cultivate, to look for the exact setting, close to the Cap de Cerus, where the vines grow contemplating a landscape of great beauty”
The region is situated in the extreme north-east corner of Spainish Catalonia separated from Roussillon only by the French boarder and the Pyrenees. It is true that it is an area of outstanding beauty that has often been compared to Tuscany or the Provence. It is a natural amphitheatre encircled by mountains which gives it an ideal climate for the cultivation of grape vines.
This area has a long history of wine production, which was nearly extinguished when phylloxera swept through the vineyards in the 1900s and many of the terraces were never replanted. The climate is Mediterranean, although a strong wind called the ‘Tramuntana’ which blows all year round and protects the vineyards from frosts and diseases. The soil here is sand over a granite sub soil, which is very rich in minerals and helps to provide the wines with distinct character.
The Vailet is made from Grenache blanc and Macabeu fermented in stainless steeel in order to capture the aromatic freshness of the varieties. The Saulo, is a young, fruity red wine, made from 60% Garnacha and 40% Carignan which is aged for 5 months in new French barriques.
The reference to lunatics could be down to the fact that the capital of the region, Figueres is home to the Dail Theatre Meuseum and house a number of the painters works.
