Beau Joubert Wine
Beau Joubert can trace its viticultural history back to 1695 and first came into the possession of the Joubert family at the end of the 18th Century, when it was purchased by Dirk Daniel Joubert. Dirk Daniel divided the estate between his two sons and thus it remained as two separate farms for the best part of 200 years, one part always remaining in the Joubert family whilst the other was subsequently passed through many hands. Happily in the late 1960s, another Dirk Joubert and his brother Stephanus were able to reacquire the lost lands and buildings to make the two farms, a single estate once again.
Today it is run by Jannie and Lukas Joubert in partnership with a group of US businessmen from Wisconsin. The dedication and drive of the young Jouberts together with the backing and investment from their US partners is enabling the estate to make the most of its fabulously situated, 166 hectares, 70 hectares of which are under vine. Situated close to Stellenbosch, the vineyards of Beau Joubert are nestled on the upper south facing slopes of the Vlaeberg Valley. At an altitude of 130 to 300 metres they benefit from the cooling breezes of False Bay and a mineral rich granite terroir. The principal red grapes are Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Shiraz together with more recent plantings of Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Pinot Noir. White wines are produced from Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Chenin and Colombard.
The premium wines are released under the winery’s name Beau Joubert. However, there is also a fabulous range of more easy drinking, entry level wines, sold under the ‘Oak Lane’ label, which name depicts the lane of old oak trees leading to the cellar and homestead. Today all the vineyards are under the specific care of Lukas Joubert.
Oak Lane Shiraz
Produced from shiraz grown on south-west facing slopes, vines of 8-23 years. It is an opulent fruit driven with rich ripe, plum and black berry fruits, with the tell tale pepper notes of the varietal. Round, smooth palate with ripe, integrated tannins. Attractive influence of oak and harmonious balance.
Oak Lane Merlot/Cabernet
Vines of 8-25 years of age again, 60% Merlot and 40% Cabernet. Really expressive blackcurrant and cassis flavours on the palate. Like the Shiraz this wine has ripe silky tannins and a round, smooth palate.
Oak Lane Chenin/Sauvignon
60% Chenin/40% Sauvignon Blanc grown at an altitude of 200-230 metres giving a cooler micro-climate. The wine has an attractive aromatic bouquet and a super balance between ripe, almost tropical fruit and fresh vibrant acidity. Attractive and easy drinking. The Chenin adds a roundness and depth to the Sauvignon.
Beau Joubert Cabernet-Sauvignon
100% Cabernet Sauvignon matured 12 months in French oak. Refined, complex blackberry, mocha and hints of cedar. The ripe tannins are supportive yet unobtrusive. Showing well now but with the potential to mature over the next 5 years.
Beau Joubert Chardonnay
100% Chardonnay. Produced from a special clone on vineyards of high altitude of 240-280 metres. The wine is lightly oaked to give a hint of creaminess on the palate whilst retaining freshness and elegance. Complex tropical and citrus flavours combine with the soft, creamy oak balanced by a vibrant acidity.
