New Midleton Distillery
Unsurprisingly, given its name, this wasn’t the first distillery to be built in the town of Midleton in County Cork. In fact, the New Midleton distillery was built in 1966 right next to the Old Midleton Distillery, which had been in production since the 17th century and was eventually converted in 1975 into a visitor centre known as the Jameson Experience.
The New Midleton distillery, literally and figuratively lies at the heart of the Irish Whiskey industry. It was conceived and built by the Irish Distillers company, which was founded by the merging of three of the big names in Irish Whiskey production, those being the Cork Distilleries Company, which owned the Old Midleton distillery, John Power & Son, and John Jameson & Son. Those three companies decided to close their existing distilleries and consolidate all their production in this new super distillery.
In June 1988, Irish Distillers was bought by French liquor group Pernod Ricard and over time, tens of millions of euros have been invested in the distillery, so that today it the largest in Ireland and boasts three huge, 75,000 litre pot stills and three column stills, with a production capacity of 64 million litres per annum. This selection of stills allows the distillery to produce malt whiskey, grain whiskey and the famous Pot Still Irish whiskey,
Their ranges include, Jameson, Tullamore Dew, Paddy’s, Powers, Redbreast and the Spots (Green, Red, Yellow and Blue) and of course, the yearly released Midleton Very Rare.
